Greenmarket Finds

This is my 100th post on this little blog!
Time sure does fly.  We're a little over a month away
from our 1st Wedding Anniversary, and I've got my
best friend/life partner's wedding next weekend.
This year surely flew by.

What better way to celebrate 100 posts than to have
the summer harvest colliding with fall!
This is that magical time of year when you can
get cantaloupe and spaghetti squash, concord grapes
and peaches, and cauliflower and tomatoes. Much like Gem,
this is truly, truly outrageous.

*Pint of fresh pressed cider
*onion
*garlic
*eggplant
*celery
*okra
*spaghetti squash
* 2 cantaloupe
*lettuce
*kale
*cauliflower
*milk (not pictured)
*2 small pieces of tuna (not pictured)
*2 zucchini

Can't wait to make:
Cantaloupe Gazpacho
Turkey Meatballs with Spaghetti Squash
Zucchini Fritters
Grilled Eggplant with Herbed Quinoa
Cauliflower Soup

Greenmarket Finds

The Union Sq market is always so wonderful.
At this time of year the smell of peaches, plums, and
lavender is so strong. It's intoxicating.
Seasonal produce at its absolute finest.

Today was a 3 bag kinda day.

*sourdough bread
*1 pint of heavy cream (not pictured)
*purple carrots
*2 cucumbers
*4 plums
*2 doughnut peaches
*5 yellow peaches
*1 small cantaloupe
*dinosaur kale
*mint
*cilantro
*1 summer squash
*green beans (not pictured)
*crimini mushrooms (not pictured)
*heirloom cherry tomatoes
*heirloom tomatoes
*gigantic okra (I forget the special name for it)
*garlic
*beef cubes (not pictured)
*chicken thighs (not pictured)

And just for an idea of how gigantic the okra is...

yeah, that's a quarter. Ridiculous!!
Cannot wait to grill these up for lunch.

I also noticed that concord grapes were at the market today,
which means that you should enjoy the peaches and tomato
abundance while you can! Fall is on it's way.

Greenmarket Finds

If you've been thinking about doing
some greenmarket shopping-now is the time!
Whatever you pick up will taste 100x better
than anything from the grocery store.
Especially cantaloupe-yes, still talking about
that cantaloupe.

*dozen eggs
*loaf of sourdough
*raw wildflower honey
*carrots
*beets
*3 ears of corn
*1 yellow peach
*3 donut peaches
*2 white nectarines
*blueberries
*okra
*dinosaur kale
*2 bell peppers
*cantaloupe
*heirloom tomatoes
*2 small pieces of tuna (not pictured)
*1 large filet of pollock (not pictured)
*1lb andouille sausage (not pictured)
*1lb chicken thighs (not pictured)

I have a friend visiting next week so
I'll be making chicken and sausage gumbo
for our Monday night dinner. It will
most likely be accompanied by jalapeno
cornbread.

In other kitchen news, we put up our world map
and will be filling it with pins of places we've been
as well as places that we want to go.

Greenmarket Finds

The Saturday Greenmarket is always a real treat
because it's only 2 blocks away from us. The selection
is more limited but no trains are involved, so I'm happy.

*milk
*greek yogurt (underneath the chevre)
*chevre (best.goat cheese. ever. seriously.)
*dinosaur kale
*blueberries
*apricots!
*peaches!
*1 red onion
*mint (to make mint chocolate ice cream)
*Persian cucumbers
*1 head of lettuce
*3 ears of corn
*small cut of smoked ham(not pictured)
*dozen eggs(not pictured)
*chicken breasts (not pictured)

Going to the market that is 2 blocks away makes
breakfast even more enjoyable since I don't
have to wait a whole train ride to start making it.
Trips to the Union Sq location typically take about
1-1 1/2 hours. That is a long time when you are hungry.

Now that the smoked ham is available I can go
back to my favorite Saturday breakfast.
Ham & Eggs with Sourdough Toast

-I added a little avocado because I cannot
get enough of it.  This is heaven.

Greenmarket Finds

Summer is officially here.
I picked up raspberries, cherries, and blueberries
at the market this morning.  All the good stuff
is finally available! I did go a little crazy on the veggies,
and I ended up missing out on a few things
that we needed, but there's always Saturday.

*half gallon of cream (they had a special and I couldn't resist)
*dozen eggs
*loaf of sourdough
*large bag of shell peas
*cherries
*blueberries
*raspberries
*2 cucumbers
*french breakfast radishes
*crimini mushrooms
*purple carrots
*mint
*cilantro
*beets
*swiss chard
*purple lettuce
*3 ears of corn
*scallions

I actually don't have a meal plan for this week
so I'll just be winging it with all these delicious
ingredients :)

Greenmarket Finds

I made it to the market around 9am.
I don't play around when it's strawberry season,
they are a necessary item right now and if you
don't get there early than you may not get them.

The spring harvest feels luxurious after
the long winter, and it's only going to get
better.  The Sunnyside market starts up again
in June and I cannot wait.

*quart of Ronnybrook whole milk (cream on top)
*loaf of sourdough
*spinach
*cilantro
*carrots
*3 tomatoes
*4 portobello mushrooms
*large bag of crimini mushrooms
*leeks
*3 apples
*radishes
*corn tortillas
*scallions
*strawberries
*beets
*2 shallots (not pictured
*turkey breast (not pictured)
*dozen eggs (not pictured)

I've already got the beets steaming, I've had a small glass
of milk, and some sourdough with olive oil and salt.
I love Sunday mornings.

Greenmarket Finds

 My market dreams came true.
Strawberries are finally back!
These are from a farm that doesn't use
any pesticides so they do recommend
eating them the day that you get them.
Which is not a problem for me. At All.
The only thing I wanted but didn't get was
rhubarb-they did have it but my budget was limited
so I had do choose the functional items.  I really only
want the rhubarb so that I can make a shrub.
Next time.

*dozen eggs
*1 tomato
*2 cippolini onions
*2 Cucumbers
*french breakfast radishes
*lettuce
*Sorrel
*2 Portobello Mushrooms
*Shitake Mushrooms
*1 bunch of Spigarello (I usually buy Tuscan Kale but I wanted to mix it up)
*Asparagus
*2 pints of strawberries

The yellow on the strawberries is pollen that gathered after it rained.
I always love things like this or finding dirt on the veggies
because it's reminder of where it came from
