Recipe of the Week

I've been really digging Korean food lately,
and the best thing about Asian cuisine is that once
you have the basic ingredients- soy sauce, sesame oil,
fish sauce, gochugaru, rice vinegar- the possibilities
are endless.

This recipe is somewhat modified from this
We used Hake, omitted the gochujang, subbed in
Sambal Olek (just because we had it), and left out the
sugar

Sidenote: this is spicy. gochugaru is no joke.

Gochugaru Garlic Hake

1 large Hake fillet
1tbsp coconut oil
1 heaping tbsp Gochugaru (Korean Red Pepper Flakes)
1heaping tbsp Sambal Olek (a spicy thai paste, or use Gochujang)
1tbsp minced garlic
3 tbsp low sodium soy sauce
1 tbsp sesame oil
Juice from 1 lemon
toasted sesame seeds
1 scallion, sliced
cooked brown rice

In a small bowl combine the Gochugaru, Sambal Olek, garlic
soy sauce, and sesame oil. Set aside.

In a large pan (preferably non-stick) heat the coconut oil over
medium high heat. Add the Hake and cook for 4-5 minutes on
both sides.  Add the prepared sauce to the pan and reduce heat
to medium.  Cook for 3 minutes.

Serve fish on top of the rice, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds
and the sliced scallions.

Latest Obsessions

*It's Rose' season!
My picks: Schafer-Frolich, Jurtschitsch,
Thomas Labaille, Shinn Estate, Haut Lavigne

*It finally feels like summer.
I love the heat.

* "Description is an inexact, and loving
art, and a reflexive one; when we describe the world
we come closer to saying what we are"-Mark Doty
I think this quote is beautiful.  Now I just need to
get my hands on a copy of "Still Life with Oysters
and Lemon"

*The Heirloom Book Co.
I cannot wait to visit this store down in Charleston!
Vintage cookbooks are my ultimate indulgence.
What better way to get a feel/taste for a culture than with
a cookbook?

*Campari-Grapefruit Sorbet
You need to make this for ultimate summer refreshment.
I only added about 1/4 c of sugar because I love the bitterness
of the campari and the tart quality of the grapefruit.  But sweeten
to your heart's desire.

*TheKitchn.com
love this site for recipes & inspiration

*The Gin Joint, Charleston
the drink list and brunch menu look amazing,
but it's the raccoon and fox image at the bottom
of the site that I am super obsessed with.

*This is sweet
Buying some random persons recipe cards
is totally something I can see myself doing.
With the vintage cookbooks that I buy, I always
look for the ones that have writing in them.  Knowing
that someone really used the book makes is more
special to me.

A Weekend Away

A relaxing weekend in Jersey is a rare thing.
I don't get those very often so, I really tried to savor
it this time.

I did a lot this past weekend.
*Dinner with the fam
*Kitchen table chat with Fink, my sisters,
and Spencer
*Breakfast with Mom Mom
*Lounging on the deck with my Dad
*Dinner with Greg at Zahav
*Meghan's shower on Sunday

I should note that Zahav is worth checking out,
the drinks were stellar and the food was amazing.
ps. don't skip the hummus.

Meghan's shower went perfectly,
and she looked lovely.
I cannot wait for the wedding!

The bride to be crown was made by the very talented
Dianne Valentine

and the decoration ideas were courtesy of Pinterest.
(It's nice to actually feel like I get something out of
that site other than just killing time haha.)

Such a good weekend. I miss all my
South Jersey folks already.

Summer List

We spent yesterday in the Park Slope area which, in case you
don't know, is pretty much on the far side of Brooklyn.
The husband and I aren't very familiar with the area,
so it kind of felt like we were on vacation!

We meandered around 7th Avenue, went into a few
shops.  I picked up the latest edition of Lucky Peach,
and we got 2 People's Pops (coffee and strawberry)
we also met up with some friends in Prospect Park.

(It is a massive park, and I'm pretty sure we walked through
a fair amount of it).  We ended the day with a dinner
at Nightingale 9 with our friends Eric and Libby.
The food was amazing, and the neighborhoods were
so cute.  It got me thinking about summer adventures-
which got me thinking about making lists.
So here we go, these are some things that I would
LOVE to do this summer.

*Go kayaking. Maybe in the Hudson? Maybe in the Bronx?

*Watch a movie outdoors. Can't Hardly Wait is
playing July 10th. I'm looking at you ZachMack.

*Get out to Socrates Sculpture Park for some free
Saturday morning yoga

*Explore Red Hook. I know, almost 8 years in the
city and I still haven't been there.

*Make rose petal ice cream

*Get up to the Cloisters

*Try to get into another Standard Rooftop party,
if only for the view (and the crepes!)

*Have another brunch party

*Make it out to Rockaway to support some local
businesses and hang at the beach.

*Have a Spa Castle/Flushing day

*Hopefully get out to the North Fork or Montauk
at some point this summer.

*Go crabbing and then have a feast.

Seems like a lot. Are there enough free Sundays for all of this??
We'll see.
What's your list for the summer?

*Grandmother's Cuisine
This collection of photos is amazing.  I would love to
set something like this up with my Mom Mom,
I know what dish I would choose for her but
I wonder what she would choose as 'her' dish.

*Cooking with Dog
Hosted by Francis, the dog.
The dishes that they make
actually look delicious and easy.
bonus.

*Why You Should Use Cinnamon
I put it in my morning oatmeal, in my hot chocolate,
in cookies, pancakes-just about anything- and
that was just for the taste.  It would be great if
it was keeping my brain healthy as well

*Buckwheat Shortcakes with Roasted Rhubarb
If I can ever get my hands on some rhubarb!

*Instant Crush by Daft Punk
New summer jam.

*The Argonaut Hotel
Insanely above our price range,
but I would LOVE to stay there.

*Cheetah Shorts
or as they call them 'leopard'.
Either way.
I'll be wearing these all summer long

A Year in Books: May

May was pretty pathetic in terms of finished books,
there is only one for last month:
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?-Mindy Kaling

I did read a bunch of short stories by H.P Lovecraft, but
definitely did not read through the entire book.  Sometimes
his language can be a little too much for me.  But I really loved
the Dunwich Horror, very creepy, it felt like a mixture of
Rosemary's Baby, the Omen, and the Ninth Gate-for various reasons
not just story-wise.

I loved Mindy's book as well, definitely had me laughing out
loud and looking like a total weirdo on the subway. The total
gem of her book is located on the back cover- it's a photo of
a young, androgynous Mindy holding a puppet.  It still cracks
me up every time I see it.
