Latest Obsessions

*Bobo Choses
I rarely find myself daydreaming about clothes anymore.
I've got bigger fish to fry and I'd rather spend
my money on fancy bottles of wine. But this. THIS.
I can't stop thinking about their Women's collection.
I want to own it all.  I NEED that Matisse shirt with the
striped pants to match. NEED, do you hear me?!
wow. this never happens....and don't even get
me started on the kids clothes. too stinkin' cute.

*The Great British Baking Show
There is something very soothing about
watching people make desserts, and this show
relies less on the drama that American cooking
shows like to create. One thing that is hilarious
is what they consider to be "Traditional American"
flavors. Those always end up being a shit show...which
is probably how our cuisine might look to others.

*Shore Time

My family booked our little shore house in
Ocean City again and I cannot wait to be down there.
I love waking up early and walking to the bakery,
grabbing some coffee and just sitting out on the porch.
It feels so good to be by the ocean for a week, and the
Boardwalk food is a wonderful indulgence. The fudge is
going to love it, so many places to run!

*Mantra:
In general we must not wish for the disappearance
of our troubles, but for grace to transform them.
-Simone Weil

*Rhubarb

I am pretty sure that this shows up on my Latest
Obsessions each spring- but every year it's just as
wonderful.  Of course the first thing that I made was
my signature cake- the rhubarb upside down. But this
week I wanted to try something new so I made rhubarb
snacking cake . I think my streusel game was pretty weak
but they actually turned out quite delicious. I highly
recommend trying both. Embrace the rhubarb.

*Making the Most of Monday
It's the day that fudge and I have together, and
lately I've been trying to do as much as we can.
In the last few weeks we've been down to Chinatown,
to Washington Sq. Park, the MoMA cafe, Central Park,
Central Park Zoo, and the Met.  He loves to be out
and about so I try tomake that happen- and I also try
to squeeze in things that I want to do.
Hopefully laying the groundwork for him
loving art museums as much as I do.

Latest Obsessions

*Cranberries are back!
I'm such a dork at the market, when new seasonal things
start to show up my face lights up with excitement. I doubt
that many people get as excited over cranberries as I do.
I love seasonal produce and I don't care who knows it!!
These cranberries are destined for a pie.

*Binging on Horror
It's October, the only time of the year when the husband will
agree to watch scary movies. So we are doing our usual
horror movie marathon, and throwing in a few shows as well.
Also in the mix (obviously) are my favorite old-school Halloween
cartoons/movies that are more of the fluffy sort, Grinch Night,
Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic, etc.

*Biscuits
I've been trying to perfect my biscuit game for years, and it has
finally happened. Each batch in the last few months has been fluffy,
flaky, and ideally crisped on top and bottom. The summer was strictly
buttermilk, but for the fall I've mixed it up with sweet potato.
I should clarify that even though through facebook and instagram
it may seem like all of my baking and cooking endeavors go very well
it's only because I choose to leave out my horrible failures.
Which is why I am always extra proud of the things that turn out perfectly
because it doesn't always happen, but that is the grand adventure of the kitchen.

*The Glorious Second Trimester
Ladies weren't lyin' when they said it would get easier in the 2nd.
I finally feel like my normal self (albeit with a small bump in my midsection).
My energy is back, I can actually focus on projects  & cooking, and I can actually
stay up until midnight. Small victories.

around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden
in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic
will never find it." -Roald Dahl

Latest Obsessions

Hello again! I'm back from my 2 months of radio silence.
Much like exercising in the morning, blogging regularly
takes a certain amount of dedication.  I don't always have the
motivation or feel like I have interesting things to say- but
I'm going to just jump right back in and see where it goes.

Lately I have been obsessed with...

*My Central Park Spot.  On my break I rush over to the little rowboat lake,
and bask on the rocks for about 10-15 minutes. Staring at the boaters,
watching for turtles, and marveling at this beautiful space that
exists within a sprawling concrete jungle.

*Chats with Mom Mom. I was briefly in Jersey this week and those visits
always include stopping by my Mom Mom's house.  Sometimes she will
rush you out, claiming that you have other things to do and she doesn't want
to keep you- but not this time.  We had a nice long chat about everything
from family history to the importance of taking the time to really
cream the eggs and sugar for cake recipes. And thanks to technology I was able
to use my newfangled  iphone to show her what I've been up to and what
the husband and I have been cooking. It's so nice to be able to share
those things, I'm extremely thankful for the time I get to spend with her.

*Summer Fruits. I wait for this moment all year long. When I can finally
gorge myself on cherries, strawberries and raspberries- not to mention
all of the fruits that have yet to appear at the market.
Is there anything more magical than the summer harvest??

*Creating. Collaging, stamping, cooking, baking- always want to be
creating something.  And nothing gets you out of your own head like looking
at what other people have done or are doing.  A few weeks ago I picked up
a book about my favorite artist-and biggest collage inspiration, Hannah Hoch,
and just looking at her images inspired me to be a little bit more free
with my own. I've also been going to the Met, letting whatever
catch my eye, and then coming home and making something
based on the new favorites. It doesn't always turn out so good
but it's been a fun exercise to get into.

*Wines from the Savoie. A small region within the French Alps
(not too far from Valle d'Aosta in Northern Italy) that seems to be
showing up more and more on by the glass lists and in
boutique wine shops. The common grapes are Jacquere, Altesse,
Roussanne, Mondeuse and Pinot Noir. The whites are fresh,
minerally, and dry. Sometimes they will have a salinity that feels
similar to Muscadet, and a savory quality that is reminiscent of
parmesan rind.  The reds are fairly light, with dark fruits,
delicate tannins, and a gamey quality. I like them best with
a good chill- yes, you heard right. Chill.yo.reds.  The best part
about these wines is that they are ridiculously budget friendly
and are generally between $13-20 on the shelf.

Latest Obsessions

*Popcorn
We've been popping our own and experimenting with different
fats to pop it in. We used duck fat first and last night used a really
fragrant olive oil. It blows all microwave popcorn right out
of the water in terms of flavor.  Next step is to pick up some
truffle salt.

*Buttermilk Biscuits
I'm pretty sure that I made my finest batch ever this weekend.
I think they key was using my own buttermilk (which you get when
you make butter) and a little bit of yogurt because I was just short
of a cup of the buttermilk.  The yogurt added a nice tang to them and
they came out flaky and delicious.

*Seeing Green
I finally spotted some little green leaves sprouting
on some of the smaller trees and the first flowers breaking through
the ground.  I am so ready for spring, for shoes without socks, pretty dresses,
lively cocktails, bocce matches, and the delicious vegetable harvest.

*Getting to the Neue Galerie
I desperately want to see this exhibit, and a little
stop in the cafe is always welcome.

*Grand Budapest Hotel
I love Wes Anderson's style and whimsical world, this movie is
up there with the best of them.  Ralph Fiennes is fantastic.
I also found a recipe for Mendl's Courtesan du Chocolat,
which I will definitely make in the near future.

*"You are not IN the universe, you ARE the universe,
an intrinsic part of it. Ultimately you are not a person, but
a focal point where the universe is becoming conscious
of itself. What an amazing miracle."- Eckhart Tolle

Latest Obsessions

*First Aid Kit-This Old Routine
Swedish sisters making songs that have me wishing
that my sisters and I could sing. Perfect soundtrack for
this time of year.

*Cranberry Vanilla Coffee Cake
From Lottie & Doof. Made this yesterday and
it turned out perfectly. I recommend using fresh
cranberries.

*Learning about Burgundy.
So many things to memorize. Communes, vineyards, producers, vintages...
The bonus of studying wine is that drinking is a form of learning.
Last night we had a 2004 Bruno Colin Les Gravieres, Santenay 1er Cru.
I had forgotten what the vintage was and could not believe it when
the husband told me that it was almost a decade old.  The acidity was
so fresh and still pretty bold.  We're going to get another bottle and
cellar it for a few more years and see what happens.

*Finding some vintage Indian cookbooks
It's another cuisine that I find slightly overwhelming
but LOVE to eat. So I'll be heading to my favorite cookbook
shops in the city and finding a good starter guide.

Latest Obsessions

*Concord Grape Cornmeal Cake
This cake is a quick and easy way to use those great concord grapes
that just showed up at the market. The most time consuming part is seeding them.
But the end result is well worth the trouble.

*Filling my Halloween Pinterest board
I cannot wait to decorate the house and watch scary movies,
while drinking hot cider. I heart Halloween.

*GMO OMG
A documentary about GMO's, which judging by the trailer many
people seem to be totally unaware of what they are. It's so important
to know what we're eating.  Looking forward to watching it.

*The candle light yoga class I took last night
At the time I wanted to walk out after feeling like the class
was not only above my abilities but moving way too fast.
I managed to leave class feeling more peaceful and with a clearer mind
than I had in awhile,  took a long walk down Houston, up Lafayette and
all the way to the Strand. Finally found the books I had been looking for,
headed home, and laid in bed reading.  It was also the most restful sleep
I've had in awhile. I don't  really want to go back to the class
-but I kinda do...

*Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, MPH
This is the book I've been looking all over for.  Now don't get
all crazy- we're not trying to have a baby right now.  But this book
is so much more than that-it's about getting to know your body
and your cycle.  Which, after being on the birth control pill for
about a decade is something I am sadly unfamiliar with.
So I'm reading about it,  and it's extremely interesting.

*Andre Heimann's Hungarian Cabbage Strudel
This photo makes my mouth water. Apparently Andre's shop
is in Forest Hills-which isn't too far from Sunnyside!  I feel a
trip is in order. I'll have the real thing then I'll try to replicate it.
German/Austrian/Hungarian food is the BEST in the fall.

*This song from this movie
The husband and I watched the end of Empire Records a few nights
ago and that movie is one big nostalgia trip. It reminds me of being 15,
in all good ways. Now I can't stop listening to this song.  I also added
other favorite songs from other favorite teenage movies.  And even if
no one else cares about the songs I know that Zach Mack and I always will.

Latest Obsessions

*Seckel Pears
Spotted some at the market yesterday and had to have them.
These tiny fruits are so decadent with their flavor. Their season
is from September-February.

*The anticipation of a season change.
The return of scarves and long sleeves, the autumn
harvest at the market, and our backyard becomes accessible
again after the mosquitos disappear.

*I've got a mean travel itch right now.
This post by David Lebovitz has me desperately wanting to
travel to Chablis. London, Piedmont, Vienna, and Hawaii are also
on the list.

*Focusing on a semi-detox
By detox I really mean more veggies and less cheese.

*Yuck: A 4th Grader's Short Documentary about school lunch
This looks interesting, it's impressive that a 4th grader is taking this
kind of initiative. When I was in 4th grade all I was concerned with was
reading Babysitter's Club and Goosebumps books.

*Morning Hot Chocolate
large scoop of raw cacao powder, sprinkle of cinnamon,
dash of cayenne pepper. whisk into warmed milk and enjoy.
*for an energy boost add a small scoop of maca powder.
(it's kind of expensive so I haven't bought it in awhile)

*Cat and Bunny Cookies

Latest Obsessions

*Okra
hit it with some olive oil, salt & pepper
and throw it on the grill. Best. Thing. Ever.
Also a goldmine as far as health/ digestive benefits go.

*The LIC Flea
Forget about Brooklyn. If you want awesome food,
nice scenery, and affordable vintage- definitely check
this place out.  I picked up a sailor's shirt from the 40's
(now I can't wait til fall!) and the husband scored this
amazing mexican blanket that probably is from the
50's or 60's. It now resides on our couch.

*Mar's
Finally, Queens is getting some good places.
We had some shrimp cocktail and a sparkling
gamay rose'.  Loved the decor and that it's
right near the Museum of the Moving Image.

*Editors-Weight of Your Love
new album. diggin' it.

*Summer Fruits
Is there a more glorious time than when cantaloupe,
watermelon, apricots, and donut peaches are at the market?!
Cannot get enough of these right now.

*Interesting article about happiness

*Boodapug tumblr
If you like looking at photos of pugs as much as I do.

so I'm eating mass amounts while I can.

I'm perpetually obsessed with him, but he's been
revealing a few birthday month surprises, and it's
made my heart soar. I love this man.

*"I urge you to please notice when you are happy,

"If this isn't nice I don't know what is"-Kurt Vonnegut
As I get older I find myself enjoying small moments,
sometimes to the point of extreme emotion, just over
really loving life.

you are what you eat.

*Somm
I really want to see this.

Thomas Labaille, Shinn Estate, Haut Lavigne

*It finally feels like summer.
I love the heat.

* "Description is an inexact, and loving
art, and a reflexive one; when we describe the world
we come closer to saying what we are"-Mark Doty
I think this quote is beautiful.  Now I just need to
get my hands on a copy of "Still Life with Oysters
and Lemon"

*The Heirloom Book Co.
I cannot wait to visit this store down in Charleston!
Vintage cookbooks are my ultimate indulgence.
What better way to get a feel/taste for a culture than with
a cookbook?

*Campari-Grapefruit Sorbet
You need to make this for ultimate summer refreshment.
I only added about 1/4 c of sugar because I love the bitterness
of the campari and the tart quality of the grapefruit.  But sweeten
to your heart's desire.

*TheKitchn.com
love this site for recipes & inspiration

*The Gin Joint, Charleston
the drink list and brunch menu look amazing,
but it's the raccoon and fox image at the bottom
of the site that I am super obsessed with.

*This is sweet
Buying some random persons recipe cards
is totally something I can see myself doing.
With the vintage cookbooks that I buy, I always
look for the ones that have writing in them.  Knowing
that someone really used the book makes is more
special to me.

*Mango Salad with Lime Dressing
mango, cucumber, and radishes. With the dressing
it tastes like a healthy version of a margarita.
I'll be making this all summer long.

*Enjingi Zweigelt 2007
I had never seen a Croatian Zweigelt before
(they are commonly found in Austria) and it
didn't disappoint! At times this wine drinks
like a Burgundy. Elegant and extremely aromatic
with  ripe cherry fruits and hints of spice.  Balanced
acid with a very smooth finish. I can't get enough.
I love this wine.

*Planning for Charleston
If you know me at all you know that I LOVE
to plan things.  Doesn't matter if it's next week or
3 months from now, I will start researching.  I've already
made reservations for my birthday dinner, (I know
it's 2 months away...) the husband and I will
be going to Husk! Also on my list of places :
The Ordinary, Hominy Grill, 2 Boroughs Larder,
either of the gelateria's-if they're still there, and Groucho's
because I miss their sandwiches.  I cannot wait
to see how the city has changed!

*Buying Dresses
Or trying not to buy dresses.  Ive been taking it
easy on my clothes spending for awhile.  But now
that sites like Modcloth are around it is so hard not
to constantly buy dresses! Maybe I'll start allowing
myself one a month....

*Convos With My 2 Year Old
This video cracks me up.

*Pug Videos
I want a pug friend.

Latest Obsessions

*Kate Quit Sugar
I feel like I'm always trying to shake
my sugar addiction- but I have no
self control when it comes to chocolate.
That was made apparent last night when I
could not say to to a flourless choc. cupcake.
But I'm always willing to keep trying to quit.
That counts for something, right??

*Wantful
I recently received a gift from this site and I was

Totally doing this for everyone.

*Epic Pinterest Fail

Latest Obsessions

*Variety at the Greenmarket
The lineup is finally changing!
Yesterday I picked up asparagus,
broccoli rabe, and cherry tomatoes

*Well-made cappuccinos
These can be hard to come by,
but I've had a lot of excellent ones lately.
The key is to have the espresso incorporated
into the foam-creating caramel-y espresso
deliciousness. Bonus points if you can make
designs on top.

*Trying to figure out how I feel about the Gatsby movie
Generally I feel pretty meh about the whole thing, but
I think that actors did a great job of really making you
dislike the characters, but I did not like Leo's weird
twangy accent he used for Gatsby.
I also felt like I was watching a pixar movie
because the whole thing relied heavily on computers.
I loved the costumes and the music for the most part,
but still can't say that I truly loved the whole thing.

*The smell of roses
When I was younger I liked roses because I thought they were
romantic, then I went through a period where I thought they
were cliche', now I'm back to enjoying them, mostly for their
beauty and for their insanely intoxicating smell.

*Putting my herb garden to good use
I've been clipping off little bits of the cilantro, parsley,
and thyme.  Summer caprese's with some fresh basil
will happen real soon!

Latest Obsessions

*Shanti Shack and Depanneur
I don't find myself in the Williamsburg area too often anymore
but, I was looking for sustenance during my craft show and I
stumbled upon these places.  I've been on a semi-detox lately
and they had exactly what I was looking for. From Depanneur
I picked up some raw juice and a delicious pickled beet sammy
with hummus, tomato, watercress and cucumbers.  For lunch
I found the Shanti Shack and picked up a grilled cheese (not as
healthy-I know) on 12 grain bread with tomato and avocado,
and a butternut squash salad with braised celery, walnuts, green
apple, micro greens, and raisins. So good! I wish that Sunnyside
had places like that.

*Lilacs
They are back! I can never get enough of their smell and
their dreamy purple hue. Lilacs represent love, so bring a
pretty bunch home to your sweetheart.

*Shrubs
Not the plant, the drink. A shrub is a drinking vinegar,
made with sugar, raw vinegar, and fruit/veggies.  I had a blueberry
one at Queen's Kickshaw on Sunday and it is totally going to be
my new summer drink.  Once I can get my hands on some rhubarb
a shrub will be made.

*Waking up early
I love being an early bird and enjoying the total silence
of the morning- not to mention the sunlight in the kitchen.

*Michael Pollan
"To cook or not to cook thus becomes a consequential question.
Though I realize that is putting the matter a bit too bluntly. Cooking
means different things at different times to different people; seldom is it
an all-or-nothing proposition. Yet even to cook a few more nights a week
than you already to, or to devote a Sunday to make a few meals for the week,
or perhaps to try every now and again to make something you only ever
expected to buy — even these modest acts will constitute a kind of vote.
A vote for what exactly? Well, in a world where so few of us are obliged to
cook at all anymore, to choose to do so is to lodge a protest against
specialization — against the total rationalization of life. Against the
infiltration of commercial interests into every last cranny of our lives.
To cook for the pleasure of it, devote a portion of our leisure to it, is to
declare our independence from the corporations seeking to organize our
every waking moment into yet another occasion for consumption.
(Come to think of it, our nonwaking moments as well: Ambien anyone?)
It is to reject the debilitation notion that, at least while we’re at home,
production is work done by someone else, and the only legitimate
form of leisure is consumption. This dependence marketers call “freedom.”

Latest Obsessions

*Gatsby
I know it looks like it could go either way, and maybe it's just
the 11 year old in me that wants to relieve that Romeo and Juliet experience...
But I do love The Great Gatsby. I love anything that is extravagant and gaudy.
So I'm thinking that I will go see this, anyone care to join me?

*Birthday Dress
I'm pretty sure that there are 3 people that think about my birthday
well in advance. Me, the husband (mostly because he has to hear me talk about it)
and my Mom.  That will be my birthday dress, a gift from my Mom :)
I know that you are thinking it may seem a little tame, but remember,
we're going to be in Charleston-in July. The humidity is not kind down there.
a lightweight flamingo dress is just the thing.

*The Last Bookshop
A great short film about the wonder of books.
What a sad world it would be without them.

*On Being Kind
The little things really do make all the difference.

*Letter Writers Alliance
How great is this? More people should write letters.
There is nothing like receiving something in the mail-
that isn't a bill or junk.

*Liberty Chocolate
They have a lot of flavors but I love the dark kind.
It's made at a low temperature to preserve all the good stuff
and is made with honey instead of refined sugar, and is
also made without soy/dairy- the other flavors may have those,
but I always want just plain super dark chocolate.

*Housewife dresses
For whatever reason I love dressing like a
50's housewife. sans pearls.
1, 2, 3, 4

*Using my Paella pan
I WILL have a Paella Party this summer
and the pan WILL get used. ooh,
wine can be spanish themed too!
This will be fun....Maybe late June.

*Watching my herb garden continue to grow
It's happening more quickly than I could have imagined.
I'm kind of notorious for having a black thumb so I really
hope these can last me through the summer!

*Garage Wine Co. Cab Franc
Yes, I am obsessed with Cab Franc. It is basically
my ideal varietal with it's funky spicy nose,
wet earth, violet, peppery flavors, and (usually) not
so overwhelming tannins.  We just got this into the store
and I was totally taken by it's smokiness in addition to
all of my usual favorite notes. At $28 on the shelf it's not
an everyday drinker but definitely worth a try.
Their website and story are worth checking out.

*Bathing Suit
I'm a sucker for Japanese-style prints, and I like one piece

*Italian Class
The Fluent City class is pretty awesome. Very
laid back with a focus on having everyone actually
speak-which can be embarrassing but is the only
way to learn.

*The Guide to Natural Sweeteners
Because I will always have a sweet tooth, but
at least I can make better choices.

*The DesignSponge Instagram Challenge: Pets
The cuteness is overwhelming

pretty tempting at the moment.

Latest Obsessions

*Lopez di Heredia 1995 Vina Bosconia ($97) &
Zilliken Saarbuger Rausch Riesling Kabinett ($34)
Ok these are above the normal wine budget, but
they both blew my mind. I never imagined I'd
a Spanish wine that was so magical- I think it's the mix of
new and french oak, and the extreme aging.

*The Story of Cosmetics
This is why I use baking soda and apple
cider vinegar on my hair, coconut oil on my skin,
and natural toothpaste. Because sodium lauryl sulfate
is in everything, and if I'm trying to get it out of my shampoo
why would I want to brush my teeth with it.

*Getting Rid of Clutter
I started going through our studio yesterday and cleaning
some things out.  We now have 3 massive bags of stuff to
donate to Salvation Army, and I haven't even gone through
the whole room yet.  I'm not going to go super minimalist,
but I don't think I need to hang on to my whole Kinder Surprise
collection (just the little Painty Ten figure) or to my required
reading for some of the Pratt classes.

*Breathing Deeply
It fights anxiety and stress, and gets me to sleep quicker.
Something I've taken from yoga classes.

*Peanut Butter Bites
They are raw, and ridiculously delicious
AND they really help with my cravings for sweets.
Did I mention that they are highly addictive?

*I can see buds on the trees in the backyard.
Despite the flurries that keep showing up,
I know that spring is trying to break through.
